There are three types of social insurance in Switzerland. They are commonly known as the three-pillar system. The first two pillars are compulsory whereas the third is voluntary but strongly recommended.

The first pillar

The first pillar comprises Old-age and Survivors Insurance (AVS) and Disability Insurance (AI). They cover essential needs and apply in the event of disability. Their purpose is to allow the insured to retire at the statutory retirement age with financial security. The AVS also pays out income to the spouse of a deceased person.

The amounts for these insurances appear on your payslip.

The second pillar

The second pillar supplements the first and is intended to maintain the standard of living of the insured in the event of illness, disability, death or retirement. It comprises the Accident Insurance Act (LAA) and the Occupational Pensions Act (LPP).

The third pillar

The third pillar or the private pension fund is voluntary.
This voluntary social protection is complementary to the first two pillars and covers their shortfalls. It is also an attractive solution for reducing your taxes.
